Elasticity equation

Post by Kth » Wed Oct 14, 2009 2:00 pm

The elasticity equation was solved by standard control volume technique as mentioned in Paper:"Multi phase field model for solid state transformation with elastic strain. Physica D(2006). I. Steinbach, M. Apel". So does it in MICRESS?
Is there any other numerical method such as finite difference or FFT. What the most difficult thing or challenging when dealing with it?

Not within MICRESS (therein we use rather a FEM-approach by constructing hexaeder-elements from the structured cubic grid used for solving phase field and diffusion equation).

FFT or other spectral methods loses a lot of there advantages if one has to solve non-periodic structures or varying material properties.
About solving the elastic equilibrium equations by classical finite difference method: To be honest, I have no idea about the pros and cons, nor how it would work in general. The PDE for elastic equilibrium is of a different type compared to the prabolic diffusion equation for which FD methods are widely used.
