New registration settings

Dear all,
recently we encountered a heavy attack of spammers registering and leaving posts with links to their promoted websites. It turned out that the GD image plugin, where the user has to decipher characters from images, did not work to prevent them (possibly human spammers?).
Finally, the best way of preventing them from registering appears to be asking simple questions which are related to materials science - hopefully simple enough for all legitimate users of this forum!
In case anybody is not able to answer them correctly, or in case of any other problem with registration, please don't hesitate to inform us by e-mail, and we will help you with the registration.
