Infinite diffusion for interstitial elements

Post by Bernd » Mon Dec 03, 2012 9:12 am

Hi,

When simulating solid state reactions in steels or Ni alloys with interstitial elements like B, C, N, S or P, performance is often limited by the high diffusion coefficients of those elements, while phase transformations depend mainly on diffusion of the slower substitutional elements. In those cases, the use of infinite diffusion ("infinite" or "infinite_restricted") may be a good approximation which often drastically reduces simulation times. Whether diffusion of interstitial elements limits performance can be checked with the help of the .TabP output.
